Planning for better walking, cycling and short distance public transport as innovation in urban transport

Adequate tools for "Neighbourhood Accessibility Planning" are, sadly, a still unexploited "niche" within a car and public transport dominated planning world.
On 26 and 27 October 2009, representatives from the Cities of Munich (DE), Burgos (ES) and Artois-Gohelle (FR) met in Munich for a lively exchange and site visit concerning this issue. The event was organised and moderated by Rupprecht Consult within the NICHES+ project.
What are useful participatory tools to define priorities for enhancing the accessibility of neighbourhoods for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users? What are suitable measures to increase the quality of public space and increase accessibility for all citizens? The City of Munich can provide plenty of good practices and presented the results of two selected projects. It became clear that Neighbourhood Accessibility Planning has a lot of potential for cities across Europe. The NICHES+ Champion Cities Burgos and Artois-Gohelle were eager to exchange and discuss. They are already applying or planning similar schemes and will look into further details for concrete activities throughout the next year.
